Did you know that fat (yes, even saturated fat) and cholesterol are not something you need to be concerned about limiting in your child’s diet under the age of two years? Current dietary guidelines for Americans recommend fat to be unrestricted in the first two years of life. I’ve been thinking a lot about what “love” is. I think many people have defined it as the feeling of being seen and the act of seeing. I really like this definition. Of course, feeling loved is infinitely easier than loving someone, which means that accepting someone’s gaze is often easier than seeing someone for who they are. There are all sorts of impediments standing between two people that can distort or obstruct one’s view. In the case of my father and me, there was a language barrier, cultural differences, age, to name a few. Sometimes, it takes crisis to help remove the scales from our eyes to see each other. And sometimes it takes a really really long time. I know now, better than I ever did all those decades ago, why my father is sensitive to things like respect. It isn’t just a cultural thing (though that’s a big part of it). He grew up so much of his life feeling unseen by those he trusted and to feel that sort of dismissal from his 13 year old daughter must have been stinging indeed. Seeing someone doesn’t necessarily mean you excuse them. It just means that the work to change our expectations—that work is couched in love. #carrotcake #cooking #storytime #vegan

Ich musste immer erst an den Punkt kommen, an dem ich wusste: So geht’s nicht weiter. Also so geht es schon weiter, aber so wirst Du nicht glücklich. Geprägt von den Glaubenssätzen „Ich muss durchziehen“ oder „Es muss an mir liegen, wenn mein Nervensystem rebelliert“ habe ich oft 100 Loops des gleichen Musters gebraucht, um endlich etwas zu verändern. Bis der Schmerz eben groß genug war, dass die Angst vor der Zukunft sich in ein Es-kann-nur-besser-werden-Gefühl verwandelte. Gestern habe ich in meiner Story den Reminder „Aufgeben ist keine Option“ gepostet. 50% der Nachrichten: Das habe ich gebraucht. Die anderen 50%: Aufgeben ist manchmal das Beste, was man machen kann. Und beides stimmt. Aufgeben ist keine Option in Bezug auf das, was Dir wirklich wichtig ist. Aufgeben ist IMMER eine Option, bei all dem, an dem Du Dich kontrollierend festkrallst und merkst, dass es Dir nicht gut tut. Doch ich würde es dort nicht aufgeben nennen, sondern…loslassen. Denn es ist doch das Gegenteil, oder? Das Zurückgewinnen von dem, worum es Dir geht. Unabhängig davon, was die anderen machen. Hör auf, Dich dafür zu verurteilen, dass es mehrere Runden braucht, bis Du es verstehst. Toleriere Deine extra Loops. Bis Du ganz klar und deutlich merkst, dass es so nicht weitergehen kann und sich das Es-kann-nur-besser-werden-Gefühl meldet und sich zu der Angst vor der Zukunft auch die Vorfreude mischt. xx L
