My name is Issy Oakley, and this is my journey living with Crohn’s disease. I was diagnosed when I was just thirteen years old. After years of fighting to stay well, I finally went into remission, and for almost a decade, life felt stable again. But last year, everything changed. I suddenly became incredibly ill. My bowel developed multiple perforations, and I spent months in and out of hospital, unsure what would happen next. Eventually, I got the care I needed. Doctors told me I’d need major surgery to survive. They removed seventy centimeters of my intestine. Since then, I’ve been learning—day by day—how to love and trust my body again. Because I’m self-employed, there was no financial safety net while I recovered. I had to rebuild my career from scratch. But sharing my story online has been an unexpected gift. It’s given me the chance to connect with so many people going through the same struggles, and that’s been its own kind of healing. Today, more than half a million people in the UK are living with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Around 200,000 have Crohn’s, and about 300,000 have Colitis.
