Two shopkeepers at an Auckland mobile store managed to fight off armed offenders by throwing items at them. Armed with hammers and a golf club, four masked people entered Hotspot Electronics in Manukau on Saturday and started smashing the glass before running off. Sunny Kaushal, chairman at ministerial advisory group on the victims of retail crime, said it was a sad reality that shop workers felt they had to stop offenders themselves. Two workers can be seen chasing the offenders out of the store after throwing a cardboard box and pushing them away with a chair. “These kind of robberies and assaults destroy businesses and livelihoods, the retailers and consumers are paying a high price of this disorder. “This sense of impunity harms us all. It escalates violence and encourages more criminals to do more crime – because they know they can get away with it." #nz #nzstuff #nznews

As the US enters the Israel-Iran war, launching air strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, the New Zealand Defence Force will be deployed in an attempt to evacuate Kiwis in the region. Foreign Minister Winston Peters and Defence Minister Judith Collins announced the deployment on Sunday afternoon, just hours after US President Donald Trump confirmed the US had dropped “a full payload of BOMBS” on Iran. Peters called for “diplomacy”, saying that would be the path to peace in the Middle East - not further “military action”. “It is critical further escalation is avoided. New Zealand strongly supports efforts towards diplomacy. We urge all parties to return to talks. Diplomacy will deliver a more enduring resolution than further military action,” he said. 🔗 Read more at stuff.co.nz #nzstuff #worldnews #nznews

But when questioned about the ordeal by Samantha Hayes, Peters insisted it wasn't an expletive. #nz #nzpolitics #nzstuff #winstonpeters

The Post reporter Katie Ham was on one of the first flights back into the capital this morning, and has described holding her breath during the landing. “It hadn’t been too bad until we were in the final five minutes or so, when it started to get pretty wild. It was really quiet on the plane, I think we were all holding our breath. “You could see the waves pummelling the coast, and feel the occasional stomach churn as we went through wind pockets.” Ham was booked on a rescheduled flight to the capital at 6am after her earlier flight was forced to return to Auckland when it had attempted two unsuccessful landings on Wednesday night. #nz #nzstuff #wellington #weather

The number of sick days workers are entitled to could be under threat as the Government considers changes to the Holidays Act. The proposed changes would see employees accumulate sick leave based on hours worked, meaning sick leave could be reduced for those in part-time positions. Figures from the Ministry for Women show that women are more likely to take up part-time roles, so would they be more negatively impacted by the proposed changes? Samantha Hayes put the question to Brooke van Velden. #employment #nzpolitics #nzstuff
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Labour leader Chris Hipkins spent this morning calling each other liars and gas lighters. This is the fallout of the pay equity issue. Both leaders say the other is being dishonest with the public about pay equity changes. Hipkins says the Government is cutting women's pay, given it's expected to save significantly from changing the Equal Pay Act. But Luxon says the Government isn't cutting women's pay, given no one's current pay cheque will get any smaller because of the change. Senior Reporter Lloyd Burr has taken a look at the debate. New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon says it is up to Donald Trump what sort of language he uses after the US president dropped an f-bomb earlier today while discussing the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict. Speaking from the White House, Trump said he was not happy with either country and let his frustrations known to media. "We basically have two countries that have been fighting so long and so hard that they don't know what the f... they're doing. Do you understand that?" he told reporters. Talking about Trump's language, Luxon said he "observed" the comments but was more focused on what comes next. "It is up to him to use his own language. From my point of view, I am not interested in that; I am interested in the fact of actually, are we going to get to using diplomacy and dialogue to actually get a political solution in place." #trump #usa #iran #israel #nzstuff
